A slender, beaked fish of the open sea, the king gar travels in schools at the surface and now and then slips into bays and inlets. It grows to about half a metre, feeds on small drifting plankton, and is itself prey for tuna, gannets and marlin. The flesh is well regarded, though its schools come too unpredictably for steady fishing.
