The biggest skate in North America, it grows past two metres across the disc and sweeps sandy and muddy bottoms from the shallows down to around 800 metres. The female lays large oblong egg cases tipped with stiff horns, and the hatchlings sometimes trail behind a big moving object as if it were their mother.
