The largest of the rays, the oceanic manta spans more than nine metres wingtip to wingtip yet feeds entirely on plankton, funnelling it in through its open mouth as it cruises. It haunts upwelling coastlines, seamounts and offshore reefs but ranges into muddy bays and river mouths too. Slow to reproduce, it is rated Endangered.
