A mullet of warm coastal waters, the bluetail mullet ranges through estuaries and into rivers, with the young pushing well up coastal creeks. It grows to about a metre and grazes algae, diatoms, detritus and small crustaceans from soft bottoms, scattering drifting eggs when it spawns.
