Hortle's whipray glides over shallow intertidal mud flats and into estuaries, often in only a few metres of water. It gives birth to live young fed on uterine milk and probably hunts crustaceans, mollusks and small fish. Beach seine fisheries catch it regularly and the loss of mangroves may be working against it, leaving it near threatened.
