A common smoothhound shark of inshore and offshore shelves, the starry smoothhound takes its name from the white spots scattered across its back. It hunts crabs, lobsters and other crustaceans along sandy and gravelly bottoms, and bears litters of seven to fifteen pups. The IUCN lists it as near threatened.
