With its long eel like body, frilled gill slits and rows of three pronged teeth, this shark looks much like its ancient ancestors. It lives along outer shelves and slopes, usually between 120 and roughly 1,280 metres, ambushing squid, other sharks and bony fish. It is rarely seen alive and poses no danger to people.
