A heavy bodied shark of inshore surf zones, bays and outer shelves, the sand tiger is the only shark known to gulp air at the surface and hold it in its stomach for buoyancy, letting it hang almost motionless in the water. Its ragged, snaggled teeth look fearsome but it is generally placid. Slow to breed, it is now Critically Endangered.
