A large devil ray of open shelf seas and oceanic island fringes, the spinetail devil ray spans more than five metres and feeds chiefly on swarming krill, filtering it from the water as it swims. It moves alone or in groups, taking copepods and small fish too. Slow to reproduce and often caught in nets, it is rated Endangered.
