This cownose ray takes its name from the notched, cow faced snout it uses to root through sediment for molluscs, crustaceans and fish. It often forms large groups that swim near the surface and can do serious damage to oyster and clam beds. Found in warm coastal waters, it bears live young after a long pregnancy and is now critically endangered.
