A coldwater skate of coastal seas and upper continental slopes, the shagreen ray is most common around 200 metres and goes deeper in the south. It eats all manner of bottom animals but seems to prefer fish, and lays eggs in horny cases, with the young known to trail large objects like their mother. It is listed as vulnerable.
