The starry ray is a skate of Mediterranean inshore flats and deeper slopes, recorded down to about 700 metres, that glides over sand and mud picking off worms, crabs and small fish. It lays its young in tough oblong egg cases tipped with stiff horns at each corner, and the hatchlings sometimes trail behind large objects as if following their mother.
