A heavy, slow moving deepwater shark whose skin is studded with large thornlike denticles that give it a bramble covered look. It cruises continental shelves and upper slopes, sometimes straying into shallow water, and takes smaller sharks, bony fish and crabs. Rarely encountered and now classed as endangered, it has never been known to threaten people.
