A heavy bottomed sturgeon that runs between the sea and the great rivers of the Black and Caspian basins, it grows past two metres and feeds on molluscs and other creatures along sandy, muddy bottoms. It gathers into swarms when hibernating or migrating to spawn. Critically endangered, it is one of the most imperilled fish on this list.
