A heavy bodied eel that grows to three metres, it shelters by day in rocky holes and wrecks and emerges after dark to hunt. Fish, crustaceans and cephalopods all fall to its grip, and young ones stay inshore before moving into deep water as adults. It has been recorded past a thousand metres, far below its usual coastal haunts.
