A whisker thin deep sea eel with jaws so long and curved they cannot close, the snipe eel uses them to snag the antennae of shrimp from the dark mid water. It drifts between a few hundred and several thousand metres, and the worn bodies of breeding adults suggest each fish spawns only once before dying.
