A slender deep ocean eel with a long toothed snout, it lives out in the open midwater down to extraordinary depths near 6,000 metres. It rises toward the surface at night to feed on shrimp, other crustaceans and small fish, then sinks again by day. Solitary and seldom seen, it grows to about 80 centimetres.
