A tiny pearleye of the open ocean, it carries the upward looking, tubular eyes its family is named for, well suited to spotting prey silhouetted above in the dim midwater. It lives at mesopelagic and bathypelagic depths and likely hunts other small midwater fish. At around 14 centimetres it is poorly known, with only a single adult ever recorded.
