Its lower jaw juts forward into a long beak, and dark bars cross the flanks of this surface dweller of vegetated coastal shallows and sand flats. It moves in schools and grazes mostly on seagrass, with green algae and diatoms making up the rest. Adults stay within a few metres of the surface.
