A small deep sea fish with a dark, scaleless body and large eyes, it lives in the open ocean down past 2,000 metres. Young ones stay near the surface while adults sink below 500 metres, feeding on small crustaceans and other plankton. It grows to about 40 centimetres and breeds throughout the year.
