A small, soft, flabby pink fish of the deep open ocean, the whalefish takes its name from a wide gaping mouth set in a tubby body. It shifts depth as it grows, with the smallest fish caught around 500 metres and the largest closer to 1,600 metres by day. Loose skinned and scaleless, it lives in a dark world where so little is known that its conservation status stays undetermined.
