A small silvery sprat of the Black and Caspian basins, at home in brackish water but able to handle full sea salt and even pure freshwater in rivers and lakes. It forms schools and migrates between feeding and spawning grounds, filtering copepods and other tiny crustaceans from the plankton. It grows to about fifteen centimetres.
