A small, hardy killifish of Mediterranean coastal lagoons, river mouths and brackish ditches, it tolerates water from nearly fresh to saltier than the sea. It lives only a year or two, eating small invertebrates and plant matter, and breeds through the warm months by laying eggs over the bottom and among submerged plants.
