A big silver fish that can top its swim bladder up with air gulped at the surface, the tarpon thrives in oxygen poor coastal waters, bays, estuaries and mangrove lagoons, and pushes into fresh water. It hunts sardines, anchovies and mullet, often in large schools that return to favourite spots year after year. Reaching two and a half metres, it is prized by anglers but its numbers are dropping.
