Few fish live as far north as the polar cod, which spends summer and winter in icy coastal water and even pushes into brackish river mouths. It ranges from the surface to well over a thousand metres and often clings to the underside of sea ice. Growing to about forty centimetres, it is a key link feeding the seals, seabirds, and whales of the Arctic.
