The chin barbel and three back fins mark out this cod, which ranges from the shoreline to the edge of the continental shelf across the cold North Atlantic. Young fish hide in seagrass, gravel and boulder ground while adults gather in great schools, and it grows to two metres. Centuries of heavy fishing have driven stocks down and left it listed as vulnerable.
