Marked by a black smudge above each pectoral fin, the haddock works rock, sand and gravel bottoms of the cold North Atlantic, usually between 80 and 200 metres. It picks at small seafloor animals such as crustaceans, worms, brittle stars and small fish, and spawns in batches. Heavily fished, it is rated vulnerable.
