A single chin barbel and one long unbroken back fin set the cusk apart from its cod relatives. It keeps to rough, stony ground well offshore, mostly between 150 and 450 metres, living alone or in small groups in cold water near freezing. It feeds on crustaceans and fish and grows to about a metre and a fifth.
