A slim, sharp toothed predator of the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean that hugs the bottom by day and rises off it after dark to hunt. Adults chase anchovies, sardines, herring and other fish along with squid, while the young feed mainly on shrimplike crustaceans. It ranges from shallow shelf waters to over a thousand metres.
