This forkbeard carries a long thread like pelvic fin it uses to feel for crustaceans and fish over sand and mud. Young ones stay on the continental shelf while adults move down the slope, ranging deep past a thousand metres. It grows to over a metre, though most caught are under 45 centimetres.
