A lanternfish studded with rows of small light organs, it rises toward the surface at night and sinks to between 700 and a thousand metres by day. It feeds on zooplankton out in the open ocean and forms part of the vast nightly migration that feeds larger predators. It grows to about 30 centimetres, large for its family.
