A schooling picarel of rocky and gravelly bottoms, it ranges from shallow water down to several hundred metres, with fish recorded between 327 and 464 metres in the Ionian Sea. Breeding stock move inshore in summer and release floating eggs. It reaches about 34 centimetres.
