Males of this Mediterranean wrasse wear a zigzag orange stripe down each flank, and every fish starts life as a drab female before some switch to that bright male phase. It works the rocky littoral and eelgrass down to about 60 metres, hunting small gastropods, urchins, shrimps and worms, then buries itself in the sand at nightfall or when startled.
