The surmullet trails a pair of long chin barbels across sand and rough ground, feeling out shrimps, worms, mollusks, and small fish. It usually keeps shallower than sixty metres but has turned up past four hundred in the Ionian Sea. A prized food fish in the Mediterranean, it spawns from May into July.
