Atlantic mackerel form huge fast schools near the surface of cool shelf seas, feeding by day on zooplankton and small fish. They overwinter in deeper water and move inshore in spring as temperatures climb toward eleven to fourteen degrees. Reaching about sixty centimetres, they are sold fresh, frozen, smoked and canned.
