Bigeye Tuna

Thunnus obesus

Bigeye Tuna

A powerful open ocean tuna that ranges from the surface to around 1,500 metres in search of cool, oxygen rich water near the thermocline. Young fish school near the surface, often mixed with other tunas, while larger adults make deep daytime dives, and heavy fishing has left the species vulnerable.
