A heavy reef predator of the eastern Atlantic, the white grouper hangs over rock and mud bottoms between about 20 and 200 metres and ambushes fish, mantis shrimp, crabs and squid. It begins life as a female and later turns male, and its movements off Senegal track the seasonal upwelling that floods the coast with food.
