A heavy bodied grouper of rocky reefs, the dusky grouper is solitary and fiercely territorial, holding a home range on the bottom. It begins life female and later turns male, and the largest fish add more reef fish to a diet otherwise built on crabs and octopus. Reaching about a metre and a half, it is now listed as Vulnerable.
