A heavyset grouper of rocky reefs around Madeira, the Canaries and Cape Verde, it can reach about 80 centimetres near the bottom while young ones shelter in tide pools. One Madeira fish was tracked leaving its home bay each spring and returning every autumn. The species is listed as vulnerable.
