An eelpout of rocky northern shores, it hides under stones and seaweed in tide pools and shallows down to about 40 metres, and can survive out of water beneath rocks at low tide. It eats snails, crustaceans, insect larvae and fish eggs, and gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs.
