Almost all mouth and stomach, the gulper eel can swallow prey larger than itself and trails a long whip like tail tipped with a glowing lure. It drifts in the black bathypelagic zone down toward three thousand metres, and at breeding age the males lose their teeth and grow huge nostrils to track females by scent.
