A whitefish of the far north, the arctic cisco lives in brackish coastal lagoons and the mouths of rivers, running upstream without feeding during the spawning migration. At sea it takes larger crustaceans and small fish, switching to insects, worms and clams in fresher water. It reaches about 65 centimetres.
