A large member of the whitefish family, reaching about a metre and a half, that lives in coastal brackish water near river mouths but spends much of its life in rivers and land locked lakes. At sea it keeps to the cool upper layers below eighteen degrees. Juveniles and adults overwinter and forage in coastal waters before running upstream.
