A stout sculpin of cold northern waters, it sits on rocky and weedy bottoms from the shallows down past 400 metres, ambushing fishes, large crustaceans and the odd worm. During spawning the male's belly turns deep red flecked with white spots, and adults reach about 60 centimetres.
