A broad, flattened ambush predator that lies on sandy and muddy bottoms in coastal water, often in estuaries, with the young sometimes turning up in fresh water. Its eyes sit high on a depressed head so it can watch from the sediment, and it is caught by handline, seine and trawl. A good food fish, it reaches about a metre.
