The longfin gurnard works soft bottoms and fallen rocks of the continental shelf, mostly between about 20 and 170 metres. It grows to roughly 50 centimetres and, like other gurnards, walks the seabed on free fingerlike rays split from its pectoral fins to feel out prey.
