A thin, high sided fish marked by a single dark spot on each flank, the John Dory creeps up on prey and shoots out its hinged jaws into a tube to suck in whole fish. It lives near the bottom out to about four hundred metres, usually alone, taking the odd squid or crustacean alongside its diet of small schooling fish.
