A pantropical dolphin of the open ocean, it gathers in tight fast moving herds that can run into the hundreds and dives deep for midwater fish, squid and crustaceans. Stocky with a short beak, it grows to around 2.7 metres and ranges far offshore along the edge of the continental shelf.
