Kara Tadpolefish

Careproctus karaensis

Kara Tadpolefish

This small snailfish was caught drifting in cold water above the slope of the Novaya Zemlya Depression, in the Kara Sea. The water below the thermocline sits near freezing, around minus half a degree, and it seems to live in the open midwater there rather than on the bottom. It grows to about fourteen centimetres.
