As a youngster this squid hangs near the surface with its eyes set far apart on long stalks, then sinks steadily through the water column as it grows. It ends up in the cold bathypelagic deep below 2,000 metres, a glassy, near transparent drifter of tropical and subtropical seas worldwide.
